BALUSTRADE STYLES
Choosing the right material and finish for your home.
The balustrade is the most visible element of any staircase renovation and where personal taste plays the biggest role. Knowing the distinctions between materials and what tends to suit different homes makes the choice much easier.
Traditional wood
Warm, characterful and ages beautifully well. Suits period properties naturally but works equally well in modern homes where real craftsmanship is valued. Can be stained or oiled to achieve the exact tone.
Contemporary wood
Square-section spindles, minimal newel posts and pared-back handrails create a cleaner, less formal look while retaining the warmth of wood. Works particularly well in newer builds and open-plan spaces.
Metal balustrades

Staircase lighting
Lighting is one of the most overlooked elements and one of the hardest to add in afterwards. Where it is planned before installation, it can be incorporated properly into the treads, under the handrail or along the base of the staircase. Well worth considering at the outset.
Doors and architraves
The doors opening off a hallway come into sharper focus once the staircase has been updated. Updating architraves and door furniture at the same time makes sense, if work is already being done, and the finish is simpler to get right if decisions are made together.
