OVERCOMING HIDDEN FIRE DAMAGE: A STAIRCASE REPLACEMENT

23 August, 2024

Project Overview:

Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments recently undertook the replacement of an old staircase for Mr. and Mrs. T in Southampton. Their existing wooden staircase had become a concern due to its age and structural issues. The steps were small, uncomfortable, and unstable, requiring urgent staircase repairs. Despite the space limitations, the goal was to replace and upgrade the staircase to enhance both safety and style.

Design Considerations:

The primary consideration for this project was the limited space available. The original wooden staircase featured small, narrow steps, making it difficult to use comfortably. Additionally, there was noticeable movement, raising concerns about the staircase’s structural integrity. Given these constraints, extending the staircase was not feasible, so the team proposed replacing the steps with a more efficient design. This involved reducing the number of steps by one to create a more comfortable and stable ascent.

Solution Overview:

Mr. and Mrs. T opted for an open rise design with oak and glass, an ideal choice for this old staircase renovation. The open rise design not only made the staircase easier to navigate but also gave the illusion of more space, which was essential in this confined area. The combination of oak and glass added a modern touch to the traditional wooden stairs renovation, perfectly complementing their home’s décor.

During the process of removing the staircase, the team uncovered the root cause of the instability— fire damage had been hidden on the original structure. This discovery underscored the importance of the renovation, as the fire damage had severely compromised the staircase’s safety.

The oak and glass staircase was carefully crafted and installed with a focus on quality and durability throughout the process.

Outcome:

The results were outstanding. The new staircase not only resolved the safety issues but also dramatically improved the home’s visual appeal. The open rise design created a sense of openness, while the oak and glass provided a sleek, contemporary look.

The renovation was a success, with the new staircase delivering both safety and style. Mr. and Mrs. T were delighted with the results, which transformed their old, unstable staircase into a modern centrepiece of their home. This renovation highlights Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments’ expertise in staircase repairs and their commitment to delivering tailored solutions that meet clients’ needs, even in challenging situations.
