UPDATING A TRADITIONAL STAIRCASE WITH MODERN OAK AND GLASS

17 September, 2024

Project Overview:

Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments recently worked with Mr. T in Berkshire to update his staircase. Having recently remodelled his house, Mr. T felt that the original traditional staircase design no longer matched the new modern aesthetic of his home. Wanting a more contemporary look, Mr. T approached Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments to renovate the existing staircase.

Design Considerations:

A common question from clients like Mr. T is whether a staircase needs to be completely replaced or if it can be remodelled using the existing structure. In many cases, including this one, the existing staircase structure—consisting of the strings, treads, and risers—can be retained, allowing for a more cost-effective and less invasive renovation. This approach was ideal for Mr. T, as it allowed the team to focus on updating the visible elements of the staircase while maintaining the original structure.

Solution Overview:

To achieve the desired modern look, Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments proposed renovating the staircase by replacing the newel posts and balustrades with an oak and inset glass design. The new design featured square oak newel posts topped with pyramid oak newel caps, providing a sleek and contemporary appearance.

The balustrades were updated with glass panels inset into oak handrails and base rails, adding a modern touch while enhancing the staircase’s openness and light flow. To further modernise the staircase, the strings were clad in oak veneer, seamlessly blending the new elements with the existing structure.

The glass used for the balustrades was carefully templated to fit precisely within the oak framework. All glass panels were polished on all edges to eliminate any sharp surfaces and fully toughened for safety, ensuring a durable and secure installation.

Outcome:

The staircase renovation was a complete success. The updated design complemented the recent remodelling of his home, blending the traditional structure with a modern aesthetic. The oak and glass elements provided a contemporary look that enhanced the overall feel of the house, making it both stylish and inviting.

Mr. T was delighted with the results, noting how the staircase now perfectly matches the rest of his newly remodelled home. This project highlights Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments’ ability to deliver customised solutions that meet the specific needs of each client, ensuring that their homes are both beautiful and functional.
