ENSURING CHILD SAFETY: A STAIRCASE RENOVATION

17 September, 2024

Project Overview:

Last year, Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments was contacted by a couple in Hampshire who were in the process of adopting a child. As part of their adoption assessment, an issue regarding the health and safety of their home was identified. The existing staircase was deemed unsafe, particularly for children, due to non-compliance with current safety standards.

Design Considerations:

The primary concern with the existing staircase was its failure to meet the safety requirements set out in the latest government edition of Part K 2013, Section K1: Stairs, Ladders, and Ramps. Specifically, the gaps between the handrails, banisters on the balustrades, treads, and risers exceeded the maximum allowed sphere shape of 100mm. This posed a significant risk, especially for young children, who could potentially fall through these gaps.

Given the severity of the safety issues and the couple’s desire to create a secure environment for their future child, the best solution was to replace the staircase entirely with a new design that met all current safety standards.

Solution Overview:

After arranging a comprehensive survey, Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments proposed a complete replacement of the staircase. The new design included oak newel posts, handrails, base rails, and square spindles. These components were carefully chosen not only for their strength and durability but also for their ability to ensure that all gaps were within the 100mm safety guideline.

Additionally, a new bullnose feature step was fitted, along with updated treads and risers, to enhance the staircase’s aesthetic appeal and functionality. The new staircase was designed to be fully compliant with all safety regulations, providing peace of mind to the couple as they continued with the adoption process.

Outcome:

The installation of the new staircase was a complete success. The updated design was not only visually appealing, with high-quality oak finishes, but also met all the necessary safety requirements. The staircase’s compliance with Part K 2013, Section K1 allowed the couple to move forward with their adoption process, confident that their home was a safe environment for a child.

The couple was delighted with the results, expressing their gratitude for the swift and professional service provided by Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments. This project showcases the company’s commitment to delivering safe, stylish, and functional staircase solutions tailored to the unique needs of each client.
