A week of teamwork, craftsmanship and community spirit

The team at Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments (HSR) was proud to volunteer on the latest BBC DIY SOS build in Southampton, helping to transform the home of Ahmed and Rifat Ali and their young son.

The family, who are both deaf and have an autistic child, were left devastated when a previous builder abandoned an extension project leaving their house unsafe and unfinished. Over one remarkable week, more than 150 tradespeople and volunteers came together to put things right, supported by the local community who opened their homes and gardens to help.

Our contribution

HSR’s skilled carpenters designed and installed a bespoke understairs storage solution as

part of the renovation. The storage unit was crafted to make the most of the available space while blending seamlessly with the newly refurbished ground floor, providing a practical and stylish finishing touch to the family’s transformed home.

“It was a privilege to be part of such a special project and to work alongside so many talented people,” said Doug Collins,Director at Hampshire Staircase Refurbishments.

“You could feel the sense of pride and community on site every day. Everyone wanted to make this right for the family.”

A community coming together

Presenter Nick Knowles described the build as “unbelievable,” praising the generosity of everyone who gave their time. Local trades, suppliers and residents all came together to ensure the Ali family finally had the safe, accessible home they deserved.

Interior designer Gabrielle Blackman added that the project was about listening to the family’s needs and giving them back a true sense of home after a very difficult time.

The DIY SOS episode featuring HSR’s work will be broadcast on BBC One in 2026.
